Tiered cakes are beautiful, but there is more happening underneath the frosting than most people see in the final photo.
When someone orders a tiered cake, I am thinking about the flavor and design, but I am also thinking about servings, structure, timing, pickup, transport, and how the cake needs to hold up once it leaves my kitchen.
If you are considering a two-tier or larger custom cake, here are a few helpful things to know before you order.
Tiered cakes need structure
The top tier of a cake cannot simply sit on the bottom tier and hope for the best. A tiered cake needs support inside so the cake stays level and stable.
That usually means cake boards, dowels or supports, and careful stacking. It is one of those behind-the-scenes steps that helps the finished cake look effortless.
This is also why tiered cakes take more planning than a simple single-tier cake. The structure matters just as much as the decoration.
Serving count comes first
Before design, I usually want to know how many people you need to serve.
Sometimes a tiered cake is the right choice because you need the servings and the height. Other times, a smaller display cake with a sheet cake on the side is a better fit. That can give you the look you want for photos while still making sure there is enough cake for guests.
There is not one right answer for every event. It depends on the number of guests, the occasion, the design, and how the cake will be served.
Pickup and transport matter
Tiered cakes need a little extra care during pickup and transport. They need a flat spot in the vehicle, good air conditioning, and a plan to go straight to the event or refrigerator when needed.
For some larger cakes or weddings, delivery/setup may be the better option, depending on the venue and distance.
That is something we can talk through when you inquire. The goal is not to make cake pickup feel stressful. The goal is to make sure the cake arrives the way it should.
Lead time helps a lot
Tiered cakes usually need more lead time because there are more pieces to plan: flavors, fillings, servings, supports, design, color palette, florals or toppers, pickup or delivery, and production timing.
The earlier you reach out, the easier it is to make a calm plan.
You do not have to know everything before you ask
If you know the date and the general occasion, that is enough to start the conversation.
You can send inspiration photos, colors, serving needs, or even just a general idea. From there, I can help you figure out what size and structure makes sense.
