“How big of a cake do I need?”
It’s one of the most common questions I get from customers planning birthdays and celebrations.
And while cake size matters, I actually prefer to start somewhere else:
Your guest list.
Start with how many people you need to serve
Instead of deciding that you need a 6-inch or 8-inch cake first, tell your baker approximately how many people you expect.
That gives us a much better starting point.
A 6-inch round may work well for a smaller gathering of roughly 8–12 guests.
An 8-inch round may be a better place to start as you move closer to roughly 15–20 guests.
For larger celebrations, a larger cake, tiered cake, or combination of desserts may make more sense.
Those numbers are only starting points, though.
Why cake servings aren’t always exact
Two cakes that look similar from the outside can serve differently.
Cake height matters.
The way the cake is cut matters.
The size of each serving matters.
The shape of the cake matters.
And what else is being served at the party matters, too.
That’s why I’d rather recommend a cake based on your actual celebration instead of handing every customer the same chart and calling it done.
Think about the rest of the dessert table
Is cake the only dessert?
Are you serving cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, or another sweet alongside it?
Do you expect people to take generous birthday-party slices, or will the cake be cut into smaller event-style servings?
All of those things can affect how much cake you need.
For example, if your dessert table includes cupcakes and cookies, your cake may not need to do all the work.
On the other hand, if everyone is coming for cake and you know your family likes a generous slice, we may want to plan with a little more room.
What if you don’t have a final RSVP count yet?
That’s completely normal.
If your party is still a few weeks away, start with your best estimate.
Tell your baker if you think the number may move significantly before the event.
From there, we can decide whether it makes sense to build in a little cushion or supplement the cake with another dessert.
You don’t need a perfect guest count to begin planning.
What to send when asking about cake size
The easiest way to get a useful recommendation is to include your estimated guest count, event date, whether you’ll have other desserts, and the type of cake you’re picturing.
Those four pieces of information usually tell us much more than simply saying, “I need a medium cake.”
